Firefighters were trying to reach the two trapped construction workers, but firefighters had to declare their own "mayday" during the rescue attempt. A construction worker on the scene of the massive fire told WCNC Charlotte that he and his crew were working in the building before the massive blaze. He said the 7-story building was set to become a 239-unit luxury multifamily community, known as Modera SouthPark.

By 6 p.m., Fairview Road was reopened during the congested evening commute. Charlotte fire said while they were battling the blaze, they had several "Maydays," which means crews were either trapped or had access issues when escaping. The video shows debris and ash falling as the flames rip through the construction site.

Video from the scene showed a construction worker was trapped in the crane that was in the middle of the construction zone. That worker was rescued from the crane a short time later. He was transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries. By Thursday evening, not much of the apartment building remained. Many of the construction workers said there were crews on every floor of the building.

He described what happened when news of the fire spread. Another worker told Channel 9 that a foam-spraying machine caught fire and then spread to the floors above. By about noon, the majority of the flames had been extinguished, and firefighters were focused on dousing hotspots throughout the building. Construction worker Demonte Sherrill, 30, died in the fire, family members said. EPA estimates that North Carolina has 370,000 lead pipes, and $76 million will go to replace them statewide. Biden also will meet with faculty and students at a Wilmington school that replaced a water fountain with high levels of lead with money from the law.
